Curtis Jones shares what he and Alexander-Arnold are now doing in training before every game

Curtis Jones says he and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been competing in a shooting competition before every Liverpool game recently.

Today was a proud day for the Liverpool academy, as Jones and Alexander-Arnold were the scorers in the Reds’ 3-0 win over Leicester City. Jones hit his first ever Premier League double, while Trent polished off the win with a beautiful free-kick.

They were three brilliantly finished goals. And speaking to Sky Sports after the game finished, Jones admitted that he, Trent and a number of the Liverpool squad have been practicing their shooting relentlessly of late.

“Me, Trent, Fab and all them, the day before the game we’ll always have a competition and the standard’s high,” said the 22-year-old. “As you’ve seen, I scored one, Trent Scored one, that’s the standard.” Asked who usually wins these little match-ups, Jones was coy.

“Not just me, we’ve got as team full of lads who are outstanding,” he answered. “The shooting standards is very, very high. We take turns who wins!”

Whatever Curtis has been doing in training recently, he needs to keep doing it. The Scouser has been one of Liverpool’s best players in this mini-revival at the end of the season.

Onto his ninth start in a row at the King Power tonight, it was undoubtedly his best display of the lot. Two perfectly taken goals and an incredibly assured performance all-round. He was deservedly handed the Man of the Match award by Sky Sports.

The challenge for Jones now is to carry this on. He’ll definitely start this weekend against Aston Villa and you’d back him to begin the final game at Southampton, too. In many ways, Jones is unfortunate that the season ends there.

Had he begun this run of form a month or two earlier, the cries for midfield reinforcements this summer may have been quietened.

Certainly, if he can stay fit and stay in the team, Liverpool have a real asset on their hands. Show clips of his performances of the last six weeks to supporters, and fans would be paying £50m for him in a heartbeat.

As it is, his re-emergence is unlikely to stop Jurgen Klopp making additions in the coming months. But having been seemingly seen as being surplus to requirements by many, Curtis has now announced himself as very much a part of the rebuild. Keep on with those shooting drills, lads, they’re obviously paying off!
