Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed his excitement over learning about his new Liverpool role, with the England international thriving in Jurgen Klopp’s new system.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 24-year-old detailed his reaction to finding out the news that he would be starting against Arsenal in a hybrid role that has seen Alexander-Arnold play as an inverted fullback in central midfield, a change that has worked wonders.

Liverpool have won their last six Premier League matches and are now, incredibly, back in the picture for a top-four spot heading into the final three games of the season. And Alexander-Arnold’s role change has been crucial to the Reds returning to their best.

Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield has been touted for years, and the fullback said when he found out about the change: “Excited, to be honest. I love a challenge, I love trying and learning new things and I think that’s something that I’ve really enjoyed this last month or so since being given that new role in the team.

“Playing in a different way, learning the different rules that a midfielder or someone in the middle of the pitch has to bring compared to someone out wide – dragging players away, creating space for others, being an option, angles, checking shoulders, there’s so much more to it.”

Alexander-Arnold playing as a midfielder has been suggested by fans and pundits ever since the defender broke into Liverpool’s regular starting XI, and Klopp changing the 24-year-old’s role to now accommodate this role has arguably transformed the Anfield side’s season for the better.

Liverpool are starting to look like a cohesive and dangerous unit for the first time all year, and Alexander-Arnold’s evolution to becoming a central midfielder has been central to this shift, with the England star now firmly an option to replace the likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara for next season.
