Liverpool seriously considering trying to sign £30m midfielder, he’s just become a league champion

Liverpool are interested in reigniting their attempts to sign Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski this summer.

Zielinski has been linked with a move to Anfield for almost as long as Jurgen Klopp has been at Liverpool. But for one reason or another, a transfer has never materialised. But now, according to Polish outlet Meczyki, it could finally be on the cards.

They claim that Liverpool are ‘seriously considering’ the 28-year-old as part of their upcoming ‘midfield revolution.’ His performances against the Reds in this season’s Champions League are said to have ‘drawn the attention’ of Klopp. As a result, Zielinski is reportedly on Liverpool’s list of options this summer.

The Poland international’s contract is set to end in 2024. With contract talks said to be ‘difficult,’ Zielinksi is claimed to be ‘likely’ to leave the newly-crowned Italian champions this summer. As there’s so little time left on his deal, the Pole could reportedly be available for around £30m.

But at that price, Liverpool aren’t the only ones interested. Meczyki report that both West Ham and Newcastle took an interest in Zielinksi last summer. Although both teams apparently weren’t attractive to the player last year, the topic is said to be ‘still alive.’ At any rate, ‘informal talks’ between Zielinksi and Liverpool are claimed to be taking place soon.

Zielinski back on Klopp’s radar

Two, three or four years ago, this is a transfer that Liverpool supporters would probably have been excited about. Zielinksi has been operating at a top level at Napoli for years and would bring plenty to the table at Anfield.

But with the midfielder set to turn twenty-nine in a couple of weeks, it won’t be met with the same enthusiasm now.

Perhaps that’s a mistake, though. Yes, he may not be the youngest, but Zielinski is still a wily operator. Capable of magic with the ball at his feet but robust and tenacious off it, he’s a very rare blend of footballer.

Having played a big part in ending Napoli’s 33-year wait for a Scudetto, he clearly still has a lot to offer. Seemingly available for a decent price, maybe Piotr is worth a gamble?

Klopp is clearly a fan anyway. Having tried and failed to sign Zielinski back in 2016, the manager went out and got Gini Wijnaldum instead. Ironically, maybe the Napoli player can now be the man to fill the hole Wijnaldum left back in 2021.

Obviously, Zielinksi shouldn’t be Liverpool’s primary candidate this summer. He shouldn’t be second either. But as a third addition to add some much-needed depth in the middle of the pitch? We could certainly do a lot worse.
