Liverpool transfer news: Reds eyeing right-back to compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool will look to add another player at right-back to provide competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

That’s according to journalist Dean Jones, who spoke with GiveMeSport about the Reds’s transfer plans.

The reporter suggests Jurgen Klopp’s side will look to spend between £20m and £30m on a full-back who will make the 24-year-old compete for his spot in the team.

“I’m told they are looking more for competition for Alexander-Arnold than a direct replacement. That makes sense at this stage,” said Jones.

“It would be difficult for him to take if they were to go and spend £50m on a right-back instead of somewhere between £20m and £30m.

“It’s a tough moment for them, but the only way to get Alexander-Arnold to step it up a gear is if he has that level of competition.”

Liverpool want competition for Trent

This could be a good idea for Liverpool, but that will depend on a couple of factors.

Firstly, it will be influenced by Klopp’s plan for the Scouser next season. Recently, the German has started to use Alexander-Arnold as an inverted right-back. That means when the team are out of possession, he drifts into the midfield as a second six. It the manager opts for this again next term, the entire formation will revolve around the 24-year-old.

Secondly, it will also depend on the futures of Calvin Ramsay and Joe Gomez. Ramsay is currently out for the season after undergoing surgery. A replacement may only be needed if his recovery doesn’t go as well as the club would have hoped for. Additionally, Gomez has been utilised in the position to allow Alexander-Arnold to rotate. Although it’s possible he leaves this summer, he could very equally stay – meaning an addition at full-back wouldn’t be needed.

Therefore, depending on the club’s budget, which may see a right-back sign in the summer – but it certainly isn’t a guarantee.
