Chairman says Man City legend would be perfect manager for Liverpool if Klopp ever went

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany could be the perfect man to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

That’s according to Peterborough United chairman and Reds fan Darragh MacAnthony. Speaking on his The Hard Truth podcast today, MacAnthony suggested that Kompany would fit the bill if Klopp decided to walk away from Liverpool.

“If Jurgen for some reason left and took the German national team job, not that I want him to leave Liverpool, but you’d be all in for Kompany at Liverpool the way he is playing!” said the chairman.

Kompany shows his credentials

You have to give him credit, Kompany has done a magnificent job at Burnley. Not only has he returned them to the Premier League with seven games to spare, but he’s transformed the culture of the club.

Forever synonymous with turgid, route-one football under Sean Dyche, the Belgian has turned them into a proper footballing side.

For a player who starred for several years under Pep Guardiola, perhaps that shouldn’t be a surprise. But for Kompany to show such progress in his first job as a head coach in English football is pretty remarkable.

Obviously, the real test of his credentials will come next season. If he’s able to keep up that same free-flowing style of play in the big league, then top clubs will maybe start to come calling.

As a player Kompany and City were clearly deeply connected. As a result, most will now earmark him as a potential successor to Guardiola when he eventually leaves the Etihad Stadium. Because of that, and because of City’s recent rivalry with Liverpool, it feels unlikely that he’d end up at Anfield. But should things go awry with Klopp and the Reds are left looking for a manager in the near future, perhaps they’d consider an audacious swoop.

For our money, we’d much prefer someone like Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard is already managing at a higher level than Kompany and has genuine history with Liverpool. If we’re ever left prematurely searching for a replacement for Jurgen though, the former City captain would be an interesting shout.
