Liverpool will keep a close eye on the progress made by Bayern Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, as they prepare for life beyond Jurgen Klopp.
That’s according to GOAL, with the former Red excelling in charge of the Bundesliga outfit.
With Steven Gerrard having struggled in charge at Aston Villa, Klopp’s successor at Anfield is far from obvious.
The Merseyside legend was naturally touted to take over the role at Liverpool, but a lack of results in the Premier League has turned this idea on its head.
As a result, with another Anfield hero performing as a coach at the highest level, it is believed the club will keep an eye on Alonso’s progress.
The former Spain international is remembered fondly by Reds supporters, and he feels the same way about his time on Merseyside.
Regardless, Klopp is still under contract at Liverpool until the summer of 2026.
Alonso to manage Liverpool?
Having taken over Leverkusen with the club sitting 17th in the table, Alonso has impressed with a major turnaround in the side’s results.
Either side of the World Cup, the Bundesliga outfit won five consecutive matches.
A win over Borussia Dortmund yesterday would have pushed Bayer close to European qualification places, but a 2-0 loss saw against this.
However, Alonso has got the club back up to ninth place in the league table.
The Spaniard has worked wonders in Germany thus far, making his first proper job as a manager a huge success.
Although Klopp still has three years left at Liverpool, the Merseyside outfit will be keeping a keen eye on the 41-year-old, as they look for the German’s successor.
With a great link between the two parties, we would love to see Alonso at Anfield.
