Liverpool transfers: Reds in contact with Eintracht Frankfurt over 'outstanding' player

Liverpool have already made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt over the possibility of signing Jesper Lindstrom this summer.

That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenburg. Writing on Twitter this afternoon, Plettenburg claimed that both Liverpool and Arsenal are ‘very interested’ in the Denmark international.

“Liverpool highly interested!” the journalist wrote of Lindstrom. “Next to Arsenal. Understand both clubs were already in contact with Frankfurt about a transfer in summer. Eintracht bosses open to let him go. Price expectation: €50m [£44m]. Realistic: €35-40m [£31-35m]. Poker has started.”

Liverpool looking at Lindstrom

On a day where Liverpool were reported as having Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher ‘high up’ on their shortlist, this is slightly better news. Some Reds fans won’t be particularly impressed by the links to Lindstrom. But trust us, he’s a lovely, lovely footballer.

Frankfurt teammate Kevin Trapp recently called him ‘outstanding’ and there’s certainly something sublime in the way the 23-year-old moves about the pitch. Supremely technical and excellently balanced, Lindstrom is a bit of throwback to when footballers were a little more individualistic.

For that reason, he’s an interesting player who’s certainly piquing our interest. But for that same reason you can’t really see how the Dane is a ‘Liverpool player.’

Not quite a midfielder, not quite a forward, Jurgen Klopp doesn’t really have space for Lindstrom. If there’s one role he could fill it’s perhaps that of Roberto Firmino’s successor. But Klopp seems to have earmarked Cody Gakpo for that role and he’s been doing it well so far.

Nevertheless, we’d be interested to see what Lindstrom could bring. If it’s between Liverpool and Arsenal, it’s a much closer battle than it would have been a year or two ago. The Gunners will have the promise Champions League football while Liverpool probably won’t.

But as it turns out, the Reds may still have a trump card in this fight after all. That’s because Lindstrom is actually a Liverpool fan. “I’ve always said that I’m a Liverpool fan, so it could be really cool to play for Liverpool at some point,” he reportedly once said [Liverpool Echo]. Well what do you know, Jesper!
