Jurgen Klopp believes Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher would be a perfect signing for Liverpool this summer.

That’s according to The Independent, who report that Gallagher is now ‘high up’ on the Reds’ list of midfield targets.

They claim that Liverpool think the 23-year-old has the ideal attributes to excel in Klopp’s system. In fact, it’s reportedly believed that Gallagher could ‘go to another level’ in the Reds’ midfield.

As a result, Liverpool are said to have established the England man as a key target.

They could reportedly be helped by the fact that Chelsea need to offload players to fall in line with FFP guidelines. As a result of a need to balance the books, the Blues would ‘at least consider an approach’ from Liverpool for Gallagher.

Liverpool target Gallagher

This is news that is bound to upset Liverpool fans. Gallagher may very well be a decent player for the Reds system, but is he good enough to lead their midfield into a new era? Almost certainly not.

Having done well at West Brom and then excelled at Crystal Palace, he has plenty of Premier League experience. But this season the step up at Chelsea has looked like being too much for him.

A move to Liverpool where the spotlight will be on whoever comes into the midfield would perhaps be an even bigger jump.

That being said, if Gallagher is one of three brought in this summer, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

With Chelsea needing to sell he’s likely to be available at a decent price. He’s still young and if Klopp sees the tools for a player to excel under his management, who are we to question that?

Unfortunately though, this feels very much like a case of Liverpool needing to bolster their homegrown group. If that’s all we’re doing here then we’d much, much rather have Mason Mount. If it isn’t, then there are surely plenty of better options out there.
