Reported Liverpool target Mason Mount would be a good fit for what Jurgen Klopp needs in his squad right now.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Mount during the upcoming summer transfer window. And speaking to US radio station SiriusXM, former Reds captain Phil Thompson has backed any potential move.
“We don’t just need one, we need a couple of players. There’s been talk of Mason Mount, yes he’s 25, 26 [he’s 24], he’s creative and he gives you goals from midfield which we’ve lacked. So, that area does need refreshing,” said the 69-year-old.
Thompson also claimed that if a move for top target Jude Bellingham doesn’t materialise, Liverpool should put the money towards Declan Rice instead.
“We need that sort of player [like Bellingham], but if that one doesn’t come off we can then put that money towards Declan Rice,” the pundit suggested. “Whether he would come from London or not, I don’t know. He would be another one.”
Plenty to like about Mount to Liverpool
There will plenty of Liverpool supporters disappointed with Mount as an alternative to Bellingham. The Reds have been hyped for a big summer and signing the Chelsea man would perhaps be a bit of an anti-climax.
But that doesn’t take away from the fact that Mount would actually be a great piece of business for Liverpool.

As Thompson points out, he has a skillset that is sorely lacking in Jurgen Klopp’s squad – goals from midfield. Capable of also playing higher up the pitch, the England man’s versatility is another string to his bow.
A relentless runner with technical quality to match, there is so much to like about what Mount could offer Liverpool.
And yet, there still remains a nagging feeling that the Reds could do ever so slightly better. For all his qualities, the 24-year-old has been poor this season. Going off current form, Liverpool wouldn’t touch him with a barge-pole.
Thankfully, current form isn’t all the Reds look at. If they do end up moving to sign Mount, they’ll have a specific criteria for doing so. In an ideal world, Liverpool won’t have to choose between Mount and Bellingham, they’d sign them both. If it’s one or the other, we all know who most would choose, but the Chelsea man shouldn’t be underestimated either.
