Celta Vigo president Carlos Mourino has admitted that he can do very little to stop star player Gabri Veiga from leaving this summer, after being linked with Liverpool.
Speaking in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the club chief claimed that although he wants to keep the 20-year-old talent at the Estadio de Balaídos, he fears he will be unable to do so, due to the vast amount of interest surrounding the player.
“We want to keep Gabri Veiga, but it will be impossible due to his release clause,” said Mourino.
“We know some bids he has, [and they’re] impossible to match.
“We will only let Gabri Veiga leave for the release clause. There are many clubs interested.
“Real Madrid have not asked us for him, then we don’t know if they called Gabri.
“Four of the top 10 Premier League clubs asked for info about Gabri Veiga.”
According to Spanish outlet Cadena Ser, the Reds are set to do battle with several clubs for the midfielder.
Liverpool target Veiga now likely to leave
Despite Mourino’s best efforts, Veiga is more than likely to leave Celta this summer.
Having established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in European football, the world’s biggest clubs are tracking the youngster.
Celta are powerless in the situation, as, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the U21 Spain international has a £35m release clause in his contract.
Although he is under contract until 2026, the La Liga club would have been hoping to hand Veiga a new deal, as a way of increasing his release clause.
However, with various offers on the table, the youngster is likely to have his eyes set on a move elsewhere – with Liverpool especially keen on securing his services.
