Liverpool think Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes has the potential to be a top player.
Nunes has been one of the players most linked with a move to Anfield this summer. And according to The Athletic, there is a real prospect of the transfer happening.
They claim that Nunes is ‘highly regarded’ by Liverpool, despite his slightly underwhelming performances for Wolves.
The 24-year-old is said to be an ‘option’ for the Reds as they begin their midfield rebuild this summer. Liverpool are reportedly able to look past his numbers this season, and see a player with ‘real potential.’
In the meantime, Nunes is embroiled in an unexpected relegation battle with Wolves. Should he and his club fail in that battle, perhaps Liverpool will have their eye on a bargain.
Nunes still an option for Liverpool
There is sometimes a danger with potential signings that they start to feel a little stale before they’ve even joined a new club.
Had Nunes signed with Liverpool last summer, there would have been excitement over the transfer. Indeed, there was a clamour to bring the former Sporting man in following some impressive displays.

But seven months on from his £38m arrival at Wolves, he now doesn’t feel like player Liverpool need.
That may be unfair, but Nunes has hardly shown himself capable of being the man to drag the Reds into a new era. There have been flashes of his undoubted talent, but by and large he’s struggled to get properly going.
For the reported £55m Liverpool may need to get him out of Molineux, there could be better options out there.
Having said that, the Portugal international is clearly a player the Reds have been tracking for far longer than just this season. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve dipped into a side struggling to stay in the division. If Nunes ends up being half as good as Gini Wijnaldum or Andy Robertson for Liverpool, he’ll do us just fine.
