Pundit Paul Merson has been blown away by what he’s seen from Chelsea star and reported Liverpool target Mateo Kovacic.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, the former Arsenal player was full of praise for the 28-year-old.
“Chelsea are a dangerous animal, they’ve got some unbelievable players and they just need to click – at times against Leicester they did,” said Merson.
“Mateo Kovacic has come back recently, I’m a massive fan of him, and playing alongside Enzo Fernandez in midfield.”
According to journalist Graeme Bailey on 90mins’ Talking Transfers podcast, the Reds ‘appreciate’ the Croatia international, and they could yet make a move to sign the midfielder.
Merson raves about Liverpool linked Kovacic
With Liverpool in need of a major overhaul in midfield this summer, Kovacic would be a brilliant signing for the club.
The 28-year-old is out of contract in June 2024, and it is believed he earns £150,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge.
Bailey suggests Chelsea will want his wages off the books, and that they won’t be asking for much of a transfer fee this summer.
With his all-round skillset, the Reds would be much improved with Kovacic in the middle of the park.
However, as a top-four rival, we can’t really this move coming to fruition.
Having also returned to Graham Potter’s XI, the Blues would be reluctant to sell the player to Liverpool.
