Liverpool now keen to sign 28-year-old PL star who scored sensational goal against them last year

Liverpool ‘appreciate’ Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic and could yet make a move to sign the midfielder.

That’s the view of journalist Graeme Bailey. Speaking to 90mins’ Talking Transfers podcast, Bailey had an interesting update on the Croatia international.

“Kovacic for instance is an interesting one. We should keep an eye on him guys, he’s on the list of a lot of clubs, they’ll [Chelsea] just want his wages gone and won’t ask for a huge fee,” said the journalist.

“You could see Man City or Liverpool come in for him, they appreciate him, he’s a quality footballer. Keep an eye on him he could move across the top four just like Jorginho did.”

To be honest, we can’t see that at all. But with his contract running down, there’s no question that Kovacic would be a quality addition for the Reds.

Kovacic not what Liverpool need

In short, we’d be flabbergasted to see this move come to fruition. Everything about the potential deal screams one that Liverpool go out of their way to avoid.

At twenty-eight, no one would call Kovacic old. But he simply isn’t in the age-bracket Liverpool need to be looking at for midfielders right now.

If there were little other options on the market, then someone like the Chelsea man would be a nice option. But with so many younger – and probably better – midfielders up for grabs, there’s no need for Liverpool to target Kovacic.

They’ve seen first hand what the Croatian is capable of. Few Reds supporters will have forgotten his sumptuous volley against their team last season. But right now, he should be way, way down the list.

Having said all of that, you can easily see him going to City and shining. Technically gifted yet robust and box-to-box, there is a lot to like about Kovacic.

If he were three of four years younger, then this may have been a conversation. As it is, we’re going to go ahead and safely rule this out.
