Newcastle now enter race to sign £88m 'superstar' who Liverpool also want

Newcastle United have entered the race to sign reported Liverpool target Antonio Silva.

That’s according to Portuguese outlet Record. They claim that the Magpies are ‘closely observing’ the young centre-back ahead off the summer transfer window.

However, it reportedly won’t be easy for Newcastle, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Silva is said to have plenty of other suitors from across Europe.

Liverpool aren’t specifically mentioned here, but Real Madrid and Napoli are. Two teams who are certain to have Champions League football on offer next season.

Furthermore, it’s reported that Silva still has four years to run on his contract in Lisbon, with a release clause set at £88m.

Silva attracting suitors across Europe

As Liverpool look to plug the widening centre-back hole in their squad, Silva has repeatedly been mentioned as an option.

Most recently, the Reds have reportedly been sending scouts to watch the 19-year-old in action. Just last week Liverpool were said to be marvelling at his performances for Benfica.

So, it isn’t a surprise to hear that other clubs have been doing the same. Former Reds centre-back Jamie Carragher even went as far as tipping Silva to be a ‘potential superstar.’

With that kind of potential comes a big price-tag, though. Benfica are well-versed in extracting maximum value in the transfer market. They’ll want as close to that £90m clause as they can get.

Right now, Liverpool probably aren’t in a position to spend such a fee on a centre-back. Summer 2024 looks like being the year of the defender at Anfield.

Whether or not Newcastle can splurge such an amount will likely depend on their Champions League status. As things stand, Liverpool are still in a decent position to ensure the Toon stay out of Europe’s elite competition. If they can do that, maybe Newcastle can be crossed off as a destination for Silva.
