Darren Bent has claimed that a move to Liverpool is the only way Mason Mount leaving Chelsea makes sense.
Mount is reportedly high on the Reds list of transfer targets this summer as they look to reupholster their midfield. And according to Bent, Liverpool could really do with a player like the 24-year-old.
“If you look at the clubs that are in for him, the only one that makes sense for me – and I think they need him – is Liverpool,” the pundit told TalkSPORT. “Because they need legs in that midfield. He would add quality to that midfield.”
Despite naming Liverpool as his most suitable, or only suitable destination, Bent went on to query why clubs such as Newcastle United aren’t in for Mount.
“Surely if you’re trying to get to the next level, he’s exactly what you’re looking for. He’s young, he’s English, he’s an international, he’s played in big, big games, won big trophies, been a player of the year at his club,” he said.
“I’ve had conversations with players in and around the England squad and they say how good Mason Mount is. Technically, he’s brilliant.”
Bournemouth display shows what Liverpool need to fix
Well, here we are again. After the euphoria of last week’s quite incredible win over Manchester United, Liverpool crashed back down to Earth today.
Once again, the flaws in Jurgen Klopp’s team were brutally exposed away from home. This time by bottom-of-the-table Bournemouth.
Recent results may have papered over it, but on the road there seems to be no escaping the truth: Liverpool’s midfield is woefully understaffed and shorn of quality.
Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott have both done exceptionally well at times this season. A lot of those good moments have been seen lately, too. The teenaged pair even excelled in a midfield three together just a couple of weeks ago, against Wolves.
But the fact that at least one of them is starting week upon week just shows how badly Liverpool are missing some legitimate senior options. Mount has been widely reported to be right near the top of the Reds list of supposed targets this summer. On the basis of today’s showing on the South Coast, Liverpool certainly can’t turn their nose up at him. For all the reasons Bent mentions, he’d be a nice little bit of business.
