Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio, after claims Liverpool want to sign him this summer.
Writing for his Daily Briefing column on CaughtOffside’s substack, the reporter claims the 27-year-old is still yet to make a decision over his future – despite recent speculation suggesting the contrary.
According to a report by FootballTransfers, the Spain international is not happy with his situation at Los Blancos. He feels undervalued by the club, so he wants to leave upon his contract’s expiry in the summer.
However, as per Romano’s update, this may not necessarily be true.
“Talks continue between Real Madrid and Marco Asensio,” the journalist wrote in his Daily Briefing.
“There’s no final decision yet, despite some speculation to the contrary.
“His agent already spoke with English clubs last summer, but it’s Asensio who has to decide: new deal or leave on a free.”
According to FootballTransfers’ latest report, the Reds could look to sign the attacker on a free transfer this summer.
Assistant manager Pep Lijnders is a ‘big fan’ of the player, and he is seen as a cheap replacement for the departing Roberto Firmino.
Asensio still in talks with Madrid
Asensio has been linked with a move to Merseyside on numerous occasions over the years.
Whilst these rumours were never concrete, they now seem to hold more weight, as the Spaniard has just three months remaining on his current deal.
Over the past year, Liverpool have already brought in a number of attackers: Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Fabio Carvalho.
Therefore, the Reds may see this position as one which doesn’t need strengthening, due to their decent quality in depth.
However, on a free transfer, it would be silly to ignore such an opportunity. Just last summer, Madrid were quoting as high as £42m to sign Asensio – and now, he can leave for free.
Whether Klopp’s side make an approach is yet to be seen, but they should at least consider the possibility of a deal.
