Liverpool now face competition from Newcastle United in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, according to the Daily Mail.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the England international, as his contract situation at Stamford Bridge is currently in the air.

His deal expires next summer, and if the Blues cannot get him to sign an extension, they will look to cash-in on him at the end of the season.

Despite low level interest from Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus, the Merseyside outfit have always been the club most keen on the 24-year-old.

However, the Daily Mail report that Newcastle have now joined them in the race to land Mount this summer.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and perhaps James Milner are all set to depart Anfield upon their contracts expiring in the summer.

As a result, Liverpool need to identify and secure three midfield additions as direct replacements – as the squad is already relatively short in the position.

Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of Mount, having previously called him a £60m player, so the fact he could be available on a cut-price transfer must have really piqued his interest.

Having excelled at Chelsea over the past few seasons, the Reds are keen on signing the player due to his wealth of experience in both the Premier League and in the Champions League.

Former Liverpool player Adam Lallana has been full of praise for the 24-year-old whilst working as a pundit. Having lauded his various attributes, he also claimed he’s a ‘manager’s dream’, as he is willing to do the dirty work in the middle of the park.

This is the sort of thing Klopp needs in his midfield going forward, so it’s easy to see why he’s so keen on Mount.

Therefore, the Reds will have to endure a tough battle with Newcastle, who are also interested in signing the player.
