Jamie Carragher was astounded by Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo today, as he led the front-line to a sensational 7-0 victory over arch-rivals Manchester United.
Speaking on commentary for Sky Sports, the Reds legend was amazed by the 23-year-old’s display, having scored two incredible goals during his best performance to date at Anfield.
“That is absolutely devastating,” Carragher raved about the Dutchman’s second goal.
“From one end of the pitch to the other.”
“It’s quality from Cody Gakpo.”
“That’s goodnight Vienna for Manchester United here today.”
He later added: “Gakpo is fantastic on the ball. He very rarely gives possession away.”
Incredible performance from Gakpo
After a difficult start to his Liverpool career, Gakpo has shown huge improvements each week.
Today, he was at his absolute best in a Reds shirt.
Dropping deep to pick up the ball, the Netherlands international encompassed what Jurgen Klopp envisions of a false-nine – succeeding Roberto Firmino in attack.
For his first goal, his first touch to bring the ball inside was exquisite, and the curling finish into the far corner was even better.
For his second, the way the team played the ball up the pitch was incredible.
His chipped finish over David De Gea gave a reminder of Philippe Coutinho’s goal against United from a few years ago, alluding to the new generation of players at Anfield.
What a performance from Liverpool – and what a performance from Gakpo.
