Liverpool are interested in signing Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski this summer, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.
Speaking in an interview with GiveMeSport, the Italian reporter named the Poland international alongside Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino as players the Reds could pursue at the end of the season.
“As well as Amrabat, who was courted by Barcelona in this winter transfer season, [Liverpool are also looking at] Merino of Real Sociedad and Zielinski, whose contract will expire in June 2024 and will most likely leave Napoli at the end of the season,” Galetti said.
As per a previous article from Italian outlet Il Mattino, with the 28-year-old reportedly stuck in contract negotiations with the Serie A outfit, it is claimed the Premier League would be his ‘only’ destination.
Liverpool have been long-term admirers of Zielinski, as the club even made a bid to sign in from Udinese back in 2016.
Liverpool want to sign Zielinski
The Reds desperately need midfield additions this summer, but a creative playmaker, like Zielinksi, isn’t exactly what Jurgen Klopp needs at Anfield.
As demonstrated regularly this season, Liverpool need runners – players who are going to win the ball in the middle of the park.
That physical presence is needed to break up play and recycle possession, as the Merseyside outfit have become far too easy to dominate in the central third.
Although he’s an ‘extraordinary’ attacker, as hailed by Polish legend Zbigniew Boniek, Zielinski would have been a brilliant addition when Klopp initially wanted to sign him.
However, now at 28-years-old, he would only add to Liverpool’s aging squad.
Therefore, whilst he is obviously dominating for Serie A league leaders Napoli this season, this is an unlikely transfer to be made this summer.
