There are currently no contacts between Liverpool and Sporting for the signing of centre-back Goncalo Inacio.
Thatās according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano addressed rumours that Liverpool are planning to sign Inacio.
āAt the moment, there are lots of scouts watching Goncalo Inacio. Heās a fantastic centre-back. Iām not aware of any conversations between Sporting Lisbon and Liverpool for Inacio at the moment. There are three or four clubs interested in signing Inacio ahead of the summer transfer window, however,ā said the journalist.
With plenty of time to go before the transfer window opens, itās understandable that talks wouldnāt take place just yet. But this is definitely something that we may hear more about as we edge closer to the summer.
Liverpool looking at Inacio
Inacio has emerged over recent days as a leading contender in Liverpoolās hunt for a new centre-back.
The Reds are seemingly looking for long-term options to take on Virgil van Dijkās left-sided mantle at Anfield. With the Dutchman turning thirty-two this summer, plans need to be getting going.
Thatās not to suggest that Virgil is winding down. The Netherlands captain is still very much at the peak of his powers, donāt worry about that.
But if this season has taught us anything, itās that failure to plan is merely planning to fail. In a football sense at least.
Liverpool canāt allow their defence to age and drift in the same manner that their midfield has. They need to proactively go and sign the right player before it becomes unavoidable for them to do so.
In that respect, Inacio would appear to fit the bill. Reds scouts are said to have been impressed while being deployed to watch him this season. As a left-footer, he would slot nicely in alongside Ibrahima Konate.
Still only twenty-one, the Sporting man has already played 96 times for the first team. Having emerged during their title-winning season in 2020/21, he has gone on to become a mainstay in the Portuguese sideās defence.
This form has also led to recognition at international level. Alongside fellow reported Liverpool target Antonio Silva, Inacio looks ready to finally take on Pepeās mantle in the heart of the Portugal back-line. Six caps will surely lead to many, many more. Whether theyāll be realised at Liverpool or not, Romano will no doubt keep us updated.
