Liverpool have made a move to bring reported former target Perr Schuurs to Anfield.
That’s according to Italian outlet Tuttosport. They explain that the Reds are heading up a list of high-profile suitors for the Torino centre-back.
Liverpool have been credited with an interest in Schuurs plenty of times before. But now, having impressed in Serie A this season, other clubs are reportedly beginning to take note.
One of these is reportedly Manchester United. Given the sides said to be competing for the 23-year-old’s signature, it’s claimed that Torino are hoping for a bidding war to ensue. To that end, they’re supposedly looking for around £44m to sell the defender.
Liverpool ready to move for long-term target
With Liverpool reportedly actively looking for a centre-back, it’s no surprise to see Schuurs name thrown up.
The Dutchman has frequently been named as a player the Reds like. They were even claimed to have tried to sign him as recently as last summer.
In the end, he made the slightly surprising move from Ajax to Torino. Since then, he has become a key player in Turin, as Il Toro battle for an unlikely European spot.
Whether or not they get that may depend on how hard they fight to keep Schuurs this summer. Secure a European place and they may be more inclined to keep him for another year. Lose out, and the financial windfall from a sale may be more attractive.
Either way, it’s likely that the Netherlands U21 defender will be on the market in the near future.
When he does become available, it’s a safe bet that Liverpool will be in the running. Aside from trying to sign him last year, they reportedly also had a go back in 2018 [Voetbal International].
Clearly, waiting for Schuurs for another year wouldn’t necessarily be a problem for Liverpool.
However, that ignores the fact that Jurgen Klopp could do with another centre-back more immediately. There’s a chance that Joel Matip could leave this summer. With Virgil van Dijk another year older, they need to get a wiggle on before they leave themselves short.
