Growing whispers inside Liverpool that Klopp's going to sell 'amazing' defender this summer

The prospect of Joel Matip leaving Liverpool this summer is growing ever more likely.

That’s according to a report from Goal this morning. It’s claimed that that the 31-year-old has been subject to ‘growing whispers’ that he could be sold at the end of the season. Those whispers are said to have been coming from people inside the club.

With Ibrahima Konate now claimed to be Jurgen Klopp’s preferred partner for Virgil van Dijk, Matip could reportedly be sold to free up funds.

The Cameroonian will enter the last year of his Liverpool contract this summer. As a result, it’s said that a ‘suitable’ offer would be ‘hard to refuse’ in the window. Goal go on to rate Matip’s likelihood of leaving Anfield as a six out of 10.

Matip on the chopping block at Liverpool

It would be a surprise to see Matip leave Liverpool this summer. But that doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be the right decision.

The big man has dipped off from his usual high standards this season. After an injury-free campaign last time out, he’s once again missed plenty of football this time around, too.

As he enters the last throes of his deal, it’s clear that Joel won’t be signing a new one beyond 2024. Because of this, moving him on this summer would make a lot of sense.

It’s unlikely that they’d be able to fetch too big-a fee for an injury-prone 32-year-old. But on his day Matip is still one of the best defender’s in the Premier League.

Forever underrated, he has been the perfect partner for Van Dijk over the last five years. Virgil has been at his best when alongside the man who he called ‘amazing’ at the back end of last season.

So, there surely wouldn’t be any shortage of interest. Besides, having arrived on a free transfer back in 2016, Liverpool would still stand to make themselves a profit on Matip.

The other option is that Big Joel stays on and sees out his deal. As we’ve seen over recent years with Liverpool, this isn’t a situation they’re afraid of.

But look where it’s got them. Without the funds generated through player sales, they’ve been inactive in the last few transfer windows. This has cost them dearly. So, while it would be a huge wrench to see Matip leave the club, perhaps it’s exactly the right time. He’d need replacing, though, that’s for sure.
