Liverpool believe Manchester City have unexpectedly handed them a huge boost in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.
That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that the Reds, Real Madrid and the youngster’s other suitors will be viewing the latest allegations against the Sky Blues as the perfect opportunity to beat them to the 19-year-old.
On Monday, it was announced that Man City had been charged by the Premier League with 115 alleged breaches of financial rules.
The subsequent threat of sanctions, including a points deduction and potential expulsion from the first division, could deter players from wanting to join Pep Guardiola’s team.
However, City are continuing to plan for the summer transfer window as normal.
Liverpool could have advantage over City to sign Bellingham
With the Reds currently all the way down in tenth in the Premier League table, this will certainly be welcome news at Anfield.
If you’re looking at both teams on the pitch, you may struggle to see why Bellingham would want to join a dysfunctional Liverpool side over a wildly successful Man City squad.
However, City’s financial allegations now look to play into Jurgen Klopp’s hands.
The Dortmund star has never been motivated by money; instead, he hopes to build an illustrious career at a historic club.
Therefore, the allegations against Guardiola’s side could put this possibility to bed, as the club could be legally proven to have cheated their way to success.
Despite this, Liverpool will need to pick up their form if they are to convince Bellingham of the project at Anfield.
At the moment, the Reds seem to be fumbling their opportunity to lure the ‘world-class’ talent to Merseyside.
However, City may have just handed them a much-needed lifeline.
