Liverpool U21s coach Barry Lewtas has praised the recent displays of 19-year-old Harvey Blair.
Blair is a player who’ll already be well-known to plenty of Reds fans, having made his first-team debut in 2021. Over a year on and the winger is yet to taste more action for the senior side.
But speaking to liverpoolfc.com this morning, Lewtas’ has praised what he’s seen from his player of late.
“Harvey has had a few struggles with injury, so it’s nice to see him feeling his way back in. He is working his way back. He was excellent against Wolves at the weekend [a 1-0 Premier League 2 win],” said the coach.
“He was really direct on the right-hand side, he played really well, created chances, and I thought he did the same again against Hertha [on Wednesday]. That’s a real positive for us but more of a positive for Harvey.”
Liverpool lost Wednesday’s match with Hertha Berlin’s youngsters 3-2. Goals were scored by Calvin Ramsay and Mateusz Musialowski, with Blair very much catching the eye too.
Blair looking to catch Klopp’s eye again
Blair was a shock starter for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup back in October 2021. Having previously had zero inclination that he would be promoted to the first team, he suddenly found himself in the XI to face Preston North End.
That was a big call from Jurgen Klopp at the time. Although injuries played a part in the youngster’s inclusion that night, he’d clearly done something to impress the manager.
Since then, Blair hasn’t had another sniff. He found it tough going against Preston but there were signs that there’s a player in there.
As a result, it’s encouraging to hear that the flying winger is continuing to progress in the youth team.
However, now nineteen, he can’t afford to be waiting for too much longer. Should he fail to find himself around the first-team at some point soon, it would be safe to assume that Blair has no long-term future at Anfield.
Right now, there’s no suggestion that Klopp is aiming to promote him again. But Lewtas will no doubt have informed Jurgen of his good displays recently. The boss obviously sees something in the young man and Liverpool are short of forwards just right now. So, you just never know. Keep at it, Harvey!
