Barry Lewtas says Liverpool have a 19-year-old prospect who can score plenty of goals

Liverpool youngster Calvin Ramsay is capable of becoming a regular goal scorer in the future.

That’s according to U21s coach Barry Lewtas. Speaking to liverpoolfc.com after Ramsay scored his third youth team goal of the season on Wednesday, Lewtas said it’s something the young Scot ‘has in his locker.’

“It’s always nice for Calvin to get some minutes and get a run-out. It was a good night for him, to weigh in with a goal. He’s done that a few times now and that’s maybe something he’s got in his locker,” said the coach.

With Ramsay seemingly a little too good for youth level football, hopefully we can see that displayed in the first team soon.

Ramsay shows what Liverpool have been missing

Ramsay’s Liverpool career to date has been a pretty big disappointment. That’s not to say that the 19-year-old has done anything wrong. Not at all.

But after arriving with the remit of being Trent Alexander-Arnold’s back-up, he just hasn’t lived up to billing. Again, that isn’t his fault. If Ramsay hadn’t have been injured upon his signing for Liverpool, he’d probably have nailed that spot down by now.

Instead, the right-back has had to contend with addressing a potentially serious injury. Wisely, Liverpool have been incredibly cautious with chucking him in at the deep end.

There have been a number of times Ramsay would have been useful. Trent has been off his game this season and has also missed some football with niggling injuries.

Having the young man snapping at his heels might have urged Alexander-Arnold to up his game. With Ramsay being treated carefully though, James Milner and Joe Gomez have been used instead of Trent.

That pair have done okay. But there will be hope at Liverpool that Ramsay can become more of a regular through the second half of the season.

If he can, it appears that he could add a much-needed goal threat, too. His strike against Hertha Berlin in midweek was his third in only six appearances for the U21s this season. Impressive.

Ramsay is no doubt one for the future, and there’s no rush to see him putting in similar displays for the senior side. But in a season where Liverpool are struggling for attacking threat, he could still end up being really useful.
