Liverpool could be willing to make an opportunistic bid to bring Federico Chiesa to Anfield this summer.
Chiesa’s current club – Juventus – are currently facing penalties over financial irregularities. And according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, this could lead to clubs such as Liverpool attempting to sign him.
“Maybe in the summer, he might have the likes of Liverpool and other Premier League clubs looking at him and seeing if they can capitalise on Juventus’ financial situation,” O’Rourke told Give Me Sport.
Although there’s no suggestion of anything more concrete at this stage, Chiesa could be a name to keep an eye on at the end of the season.
Chiesa still worth a try for Liverpool
18 months ago, we could write all day about why Federico Chiesa would be the absolute perfect signing for Liverpool.
Explosive, feisty and capable of scoring bangers with either foot, he would have slotted into Jurgen Klopp’s style of play seamlessly.
But the last couple of years haven’t been especially kind to the 25-year-old. A serious knee injury last January wrecked his hopes of kicking on from an impressive European Championships with Italy.
Since then, Chiesa hasn’t looked quite the same player.
Still, he’d be more than worth taking a punt on. Given Liverpool’s need for someone to deputise for Mohamed Salah on the right of the Reds attack, the Italian would fit the bill nicely.
Lively and relentless, Chiesa has previously been compared to Liverpool hero Luis Suarez by Joe Cole.
“The biggest attribute he’s [Chiesa] got is he plays with a humility. He’s hustling and bustling like a young Luis Suarez character. He can make something out of nothing,” Cole said via Metro. The former Fiorentina man has also been dubbed ‘really special’ by the legendary Gigi Buffon [Gazzetta dello Sport].
And as a result of Juventus’ issues, perhaps he could be available at something approaching a ‘bargain’ fee. Liverpool did reportedly try to sign Chiesa before, in 2020, with a £60m fee mooted. Testing the waters with a much lower bid could be a smart move this summer.
