Liverpool transfers: 22-year-old that Reds like won’t move today – journalist

Liverpool are supposedly fans of Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher. He’s been linked with a move away on transfer deadline day.

There was an interesting line in the Daily Mail last night. They claimed that Liverpool like Conor Gallagher – a player who could move on transfer deadline day.

Chelsea, after all, are pushing to sign all the midfielders and there’s a sense that Gallagher could move on. There wouldn’t be much space for him in the squad, while the Blues could use the income at this stage.

The Guardian, for instance, links Chelsea with moves for both Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo. That then brought about interest in Gallagher.

Lots of it, too. Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham United all expressed interest, according to the Athletic. It now seems that he’ll stick around, however.

“Conor Gallagher staying at Chelsea,” writes David Ornstein on Twitter. “Chelsea don’t want another loan & permanent offers well below valuation.

“Barring late twist, 22yo midfielder will be at Stamford Bridge until at least summer + important part of youth movement.”

Conor Gallagher and Liverpool

As we wrote this morning, the idea of singing Gallagher actually makes a lot of sense to us. He’s still only 22 and has the qualities Liverpool like in midfield.

A deadline day move was always unlikely, though. Perhaps, then, this is actually positive news as the player will remain available in the summer.

We can’t imagine Chelsea will stop their spending, either, and could sit down to negotiate. Liverpool will have space in their squad, too, as Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all out of contract. We think Gallagher could be a smart replacement for Oxlade-Chamberlain, in particular.

This might be one to watch, then. No, Gallagher shouldn’t be the big signing that corrects Liverpool. As a very useful member of the squad, though, the Reds could find a smart deal.
