Long-term Liverpool transfer target Marcus Thuram is nearing a move to Bayern Munich, according to reports. The Frenchman is out of contract this summer.
This comes from FCInterNews of the TuttoMercatoWeb network. They claim that Marcus Thuram is ‘really close’ to signing with Bayern Munich.
The Frenchman is out of contract in the summer, with his Borrusia Monchengladbach deal coming to an end. He’s spent the last four years there, building a very solid reputation for himself.
In fact, Thuram forced his way into the French World Cup squad this winter. He impressed, too, assisting Kylian Mbappé’s second goal in the final.
And so there was always going to be plenty of interest in the player. Bild mentioned Inter as a likely destination, as well as Bayern Munich. The Express linked Liverpool – and those are links that actually go back years now.

But it appears Bayern will ultimately win the race here. Thuram – now 25 – has been labelled ‘world-class’ in the past so there’s a chance other sides regret missing out here.
Liverpool, though, will have other plans in mind.
Liverpool transfers
In truth, Liverpool were never going to push for Thuram after signing Cody Gakpo this month. The Frenchman typically plays from the left wing or as a centre-forward – and the Reds have several players who do the same.
Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Luis Díaz and Darwin Nunez all prefer those two roles. Thuram, then, even on a free transfer, would have been a luxury too far.

As for what Liverpool do need, their investment almost certainly comes in midfield. We do think they’ll target a free transfer as a complement to a big-money signing – just not a forward.
Mason Mount could be the most likely choice. His Chelsea deal expires in the summer and signing him could do wonders for Liverpool. So while they missed out on Thuram, a similar transfer could be on the cards.
