£60m Liverpool target’s price set to drop during summer transfer window

Reported Liverpool transfer target Moises Caicedo is likely to see his price-tag drop ahead of a summer move.

Caicedo has reportedly been the subject of bids from Arsenal and Chelsea over the final days of the January window. Despite offers of up to £60m said to have come Brighton’s way, they’re claimed to be adamant that Caicedo is going nowhere.

Now, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, the 21-year-old may not command such a high fee come the summer market. Writing on Twitter, Jacobs claimed that several factors could mean that Brighton will be forced to sell Caicedo for lower than what they’re being offered right now.

“There is a likelihood Caicedo’s value come summer will be lower not higher (or even ‘protected’),” wrote the journalist. “This is due to other midfielders on market then, two club bids now and (depending on what happens next) a likely inflated price.”

Over the last 24 hours, it has started to feel inevitable that Caicedo would be leaving Brighton before January is out. With Liverpool unlikely to make a winter move, this would see them lose out on the Ecuadorian.

That could still transpire of course. But it seems as though Brighton are desperate to keep hold of him.

As a result, Liverpool may now be optimistic of re-entering the race. A fee of below £60m may be palatable to the Reds in a summer where a rebuild is necessary.

Given that they’re long-term admirers of Caicedo, maybe they’ll see their chance to pounce.

Of course, it’s still likely that Arsenal and Chelsea will return for the young midfielder again. But with more time for the player to make a decision, Liverpool shouldn’t fear that.

One thing that Jacobs doesn’t factor in is how this saga will have affected Caicedo mentally.

The Ecuador international is clearly desperate to make the move away from Brighton. If that does end up being blocked, it’s conceivable that his performance levels dip over the second half of the season.

As a result of that, his valuation would drop accordingly too. All logic would suggest that Brighton cut their losses and sell now. From a Liverpool point of view though, we hope they don’t.
