Liverpool transfers: Klopp could make last-minute midfield signing

Liverpool are set to try and sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge in the last days of the transfer window.

That’s according to journalist Simon Phillips. Writing on his Substack page Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, Phillips claimed that the Reds are set to battle Chelsea to bring Berge to the Premier League.

With both teams on the hunt for midfield additions, the Norwegian could be a cut-price addition.

The 24-year-old has long been seen as a potential recruit for Jurgen Klopp. But despite dropping down to the Championship in 2021, he is still yet to leave Brammall Lane.

Berge still an option for Liverpool

This won’t be a popular piece of news with supporters. With names such as Jude Bellingham, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo flying around, Berge is hardly the sexy option.

But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be handy for Liverpool. He has been a mainstay for the Blades this season as they aim for promotion.

Granted, that doesn’t make him good enough to play for Liverpool. He has reportedly been on the Reds radar for a number of years though, so they’re obviously aware of what he can do.

And from the player’s point of view, he sounds very keen to move to Merseyside.

Back in 2019, having played against Liverpool for Genk, Berge told TV2 via The Metro that it was a ‘dream’ to play more at Anfield in the future.

So far, he’s realised that dream only once more – scoring at the stadium for Sheffield United in 2020.

As Liverpool look to bolster their ranks for the second half of the season, Berge would be a good option. His release clause has previously been reported as being around £35m. With his contract due to expire in summer 2024 though, that is surely negotiable.

Given the prices being quoted for some of the other names reportedly on Liverpool’s list, you can see the appeal of Berge. Just because he’s cheaper doesn’t make him a bad player. The Reds used to find value in shopping in these slightly more obscure markets. It’s what made them successful. Getting back to it wouldn’t be the worst thin.
