Chelsea want to compete with Liverpool for several midfield transfers in 2023, according to reports. They can’t sign them all. Surely.
Chelsea are now trying to sign every player in football under their new ownership. This naturally sees them rival other clubs for transfers, given there are other clubs in the world who want to sign players.
And so the Blues are currently bumping into Liverpool when it comes to midfielders. The Reds desperately need to rejuvenate their midfield and will look to do big business in 2023. Chelsea, though, appear to want the same players.
So here are four midfielders currently linked with both clubs.
Liverpool vs Chelsea transfers
Matheus Nunes
The latest player on the list is Matheus Nunes of Wolves. Liverpool have actually been linked with the player since he was at Sporting – his move to Molineux came in the summer.
But now the Telegraph says Chelsea like him and could rival Liverpool in a £44m race this summer.
We’re big fans of Nunes and think he’d fit in at Liverpool nicely. He’s far from the only target, though – for either side.
Enzo Fernández
Enzo Fernández is in high demand after his superb World Cup with Argentina. Liverpool were linked before the tournament, though – if anything, his wonderful performances made it more difficult for them to sign him.

Record claims they still want him. As do Chelsea, naturally, who blundered an attempt to do a deal this month. First they told Benfica they’d meet his release clause, then they agreed terms, then they decided they wouldn’t meet his release clause.
Benfica boss Roger Schmidt called it ‘disrespectful’ and we imagine that hurts their chances in the summer.
Moisés Caicedo
The Guardian has both Liverpool and Chelsea down as interested in Brighton’s Moisés Caicedo. They’re far from the only outlet claiming that, either.

Fabrizio Romano claims both clubs – and Arsenal – are ‘well informed’ on the player’s situation. Though, that situation appears to be Brighton setting a £100m price for this month. Maybe that comes down in the summer.
Jude Bellingham
Liverpool’s no.1 transfer target is unquestionably Jude Bellingham. The Athletic reports that Chelsea are also desperate to sign the player but believe the Reds are in pole position.
And at the end of the day, Liverpool would happily concede any of these targets to Chelsea if they got Bellingham for themselves. He’s the prize pick here – and the one everyone wants above all.
