Liverpool are reportedly set to agree a £44m deal for Matheus Nunes. It’s a move for what could be their ideal midfielder.
Matheus Nunes is a name we saw a lot of in the summer as reports in Portugal continuously linked him with Liverpool. Eventually, he’d join Wolves but it appears the links with the Reds were accurate.
Now the Telegraph reports that Liverpool are set to agree a £44m deal with Wolves to sign Nunes in the summer. They’ve kept track of him and now believe he’s the right signing.

And we agree with that. Nunes could actually be the exact midfielder Liverpool need right now. The big question is just: why did they wait?
Liverpool to agree Matheus Nunes deal
Jamie Carragher made some interesting comments this week when he talked about Liverpool’s midfield. They had the wrong players there, he believes, and someone like Jude Bellingham isn’t the answer.
“Thiago, for me, is not a problem if the other two are full of energy and have the power to stop counter-attacks and the opposition,” he told Sky Sports.
“Everyone keeps talking about Jude Bellingham – Liverpool haven’t got a problem going forward. It’s actually a midfielder to stop the opposition coming right through them [that they need].”
Essentially, Carragher feels Liverpool have become too technical in midfield. He wants to see a return to the all-action players of Jurgen Klopp’s best team. Players like Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum at their peak – those who can stop the opposition, win midfield battles, and sew the team together.
We believe Nunes is exactly that. We wrote as much back in July, believing the Portuguese midfielder to be the all-around player Liverpool love.

He’s capable of having games where he wins three or four tackles. He can create chances, too, and multiple per game. He’ll even dribble past players when the time calls for it.
And that’s the key thing – when the time calls for it. Nunes doesn’t do all of this in every game but generally switches his game up. That’s the magic Henderson and Wijnaldum brought.
Here’s a player who can play a possession game if Klopp wants it, but can also win a midfield battle with plenty of tackles. It makes sense that Liverpool want him, even after a slow start to life in England.
For £44m, he could be the perfect addition.
