Liverpool must recall Jordan Henderson to their starting XI, says John Aldridge. The Reds’ great feels the team needs their captain.
“For me, Henderson has been a fantastic captain and leading figure over the years for the club and has to come back into the team,” says Aldridge.
“Whether his absence was down to a niggling injury or the science saying he’s not quite fit enough to start, Jordan has a big role in helping us get back to where we want to be.
“He’s a big player and a big motivator on the pitch. We need him back on the team.”
Jordan Henderson at Liverpool
Aldridge makes it clear in his piece that you’ve got to ‘trust’ Klopp’s decision to drop Henderson. The former striker understands wanting to keep that midfield of Stefan Bajcetic, Naby Keita and Thiago after their fine performance against Wolves.
But it’s easy to see why you’d come away from the draw with Chelsea wanting Henderson back in the side. Liverpool lacked drive through the middle and lacked their captain’s aggression.
Though, really, this is a sign of how difficult things are right now. Henderson has played consistently this season and simply underperformed. Liverpool don’t look any better with him in the team – they largely look the same.
The biggest argument for this not being Henderson’s fault is that he was great for England at the World Cup. It only seems to be in this Liverpool team that he looks unable to contribute at a high level.
Maybe that’s down to Liverpool wanting a harder press, or maybe he’s just not capable of shining in a broken team. Few players are, admittedly.
As for what Klopp should do, we have no real idea. Nothing is getting the desired results, though the Wolves performance was closer to what you’d want. Henderson likely isn’t the answer but then, no one else appears to be, either.
