There’s a positive update on Darwin Nunez ahead of Liverpool vs Chelsea this weekend. The Uruguayan missed the last two fixtures.
This comes from Goal. They report that Darwin Nunez is back in training and ready to face Chelsea on Saturday.
Nunez has missed Liverpool’s last two fixtures through injury. The first saw a disastrous display against Brighton that was arguably the worst we’ve seen under Jurgen Klopp.
But the Reds did beat Wolves on Tuesday without their star striker. It should be said, though, that they still missed having a goal threat up front and we felt Nunez’s absence was clear.
He should return for Saturday, though, in what’s an enormous boost for the Reds. They’re already so short of forwards, after all, with Luis Díaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino all still missing.
Nunez’s return, then, is exactly what they need.
Darwin Nunez returns for Liverpool
The injury list doesn’t even stop there, of course. Virgil van Dijk is out, while Harvey Elliott received a knock to his ankle against Wolves. We’ll see if he’s okay to play against Chelsea.
This has been the case all season long, though. Klopp has never had a full squad to pick from and won’t have that luxury until at least March, with Díaz out long-term. We doubt he’ll have it all this season, in all honesty.
The more first-team players available, the better. Nunez is a particularly important one – he’s one of the few Liverpool can count on as a true no.9. With Jota and Firmino out, he’s the only one.
Trent Alexander-Arnold called him an ‘outstanding’ player earlier this season and he truly is. The Uruguayan just needs a bit more luck in front of goal and he’ll be very special indeed.
Hopefully, he gets that luck on Saturday in what will be a massive game for Liverpool.
