Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been very impressed by striker Darwin Nunez since he arrived at Anfield this season.

Speaking with the club’s official website, the defender lauded the Uruguay international, who faced criticism in the media due to several missed chances against Leicester City.

“I think I speak on behalf of all the lads: he’s been, I think, outstanding since he came in,” Alexander-Arnold said.

“People will judge him on his goals and that’s part of being a striker, that’s part of life. But I think he can keep walking off the pitch with his head held high because he is getting in positions that are really, really hurting the opposition.

“He’s such a threat, he’s getting in behind, he’s holding the ball up, he’s flicking balls on, he’s doing everything that the manager has asked of him. His pressing, his attitude, his desire, you can’t question any of it.

“You’ll get people who will say he’s missed a few chances and he’s missed one-on-ones and maybe he should have tucked the second goal away, but he’s getting himself in those positions and when the goals do come, I’m sure they will come like London buses! We’re just waiting for that but he’s a fantastic lad and he’s an outstanding player as well.”

Nunez arrived on Merseyside this summer in a club-record deal, having bagged 34 times for Benfica during the previous season.

With an initial £64m paid, the forward has endured criticism this term for missing a number of clear-cut chances in front of goal.

However, these remarks have been completely unfair, given his exciting performances. In 21 matches for the Reds this season, the 23-year-old has totalled nine goals and three assists – including three goals in the Champions League.

Saying this, the most promising part of his game has been his chance creation; not only for himself, but for Liverpool as an XI.

Nunez’s electric pace and brute strength cause chaos for Premier League defences, meaning a large majority of the team’s chances have come from the youngster’s incredible work-ethic.

Therefore, once Nunez fully settles into life on Merseyside, his critics will sure be quiet, as he is showing all the characteristics needed to succeed in a Reds shirt.
