Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol has claimed Jurgen Klopp can no longer rely on Alisson Becker to carry the Reds to victory.
Speaking with ESPN UK for their YouTube channel, the former Scotland international suggested that even the Brazil no.1 is below his usual standards this season.
“Even Allison, who is good as he is, isn’t making any saves anymore,” Nicol said.
“You know, this time last year, we were talking about if anybody’s through one on one, I think he’s going to save it.
“That’s not the case right now. That’s hardly a criticism that, you know, you’re expecting him to make saves all the time.
“But the truth is, if he makes a save here and there, that could maybe change something.
“Even he’s not doing that, although that may seem harsh on him. But even he’s not making a save.”
Nicol says even Alisson isn’t playing well
While the 30-year-old may have had a game here or there where he could have potentially kept the ball out of the net, he has ultimately been Liverpool’s best player this season.
Without him, the Reds wouldn’t be anywhere near the top half of the Premier League table.
After 18 games played, Klopp’s side have conceded just 25 goals. Putting this into perspective, Liverpool look like one of the poorest teams in the division this term. The squad clearly have no confidence, and they expect to concede in every single fixture.
Now while the Reds’ defensive record isn’t something to be admired, it would be a whole lot worse if Alisson wasn’t the man between the posts.
At times this season, the Brazilian has been absolutely sensational.
Therefore, with the rest of the team looking near-abysmal, Alisson was always going to concede goals – he isn’t a one-man army.
Consequently, it’s unfair to give the goalkeeper any stick this term, as he has genuinely carried Liverpool to victory on multiple occasions.
