Jamie Carragher has claimed that Liverpool would be even lower in the Premier League table without Alisson Becker.
The former Reds defender weighed in with his thoughts after Liverpool’s pathetic 3-0 loss against Brighton today. Taking to Twitter, Carragher said his former team were as ‘bad as anyone defensively’ in the league.
“Liverpool are as bad defensively as anyone in the Premier League right now. Fortunately they have the best keeper which means they aren’t further down the table,” he tweeted.
No questions asked here, this is completely correct. As it is, even Alisson can’t help this ragged bunch from shipping goal after goal after goal. Liverpool fall to eight after their horror show at the Amex.
Getting back to basics
In the past, Liverpool’s last two Premier League games would have been six points on the board.
Right now though, both Brentford and Brighton look lightyears ahead of where the Reds are at. Granted, they’re two of the trickiest places to visit right now, but six goals conceded and one scored simply isn’t good enough.
All season long Liverpool have been conceding goals left, right and centre. They’ve now shipped twenty-five in the Premier League this year.
Statistically, that actually puts them around the middle of the pack this season. When you consider that six of those have been in the last two games, you can see that it hasn’t all been bad.
But that’s where Alisson comes in. Without the big Brazilian, things would surely have been much, much worse.
It doesn’t really even bear thinking about what position Liverpool would be in without him.
But even Ali has a limit. If you leave him exposed time after time after time, he’s going to be beaten. That’s what Liverpool seem intent on doing every single game right now.
They have to get back to basics. Forget about playing with style and energy right now, because they’re not doing that anyway. Instead, they need to get together defensively and stop being so easy to play through. How we could do with someone like Carragher to lead that rebuild.
