Report: 'Unbelievable' Liverpool youngster put in training with the U21 squad, he won't be loaned out

Liverpool won’t let young centre-back Billy Koumetio leave the club on-loan again this season, after recalling him from Austria Vienna.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that the 20-year-old will instead train with the U21 side. As of now, there are reportedly no plans to add him to the senior squad.

There had been some rumblings that Koumetio had been recalled with Virgil van Dijk’s recent injury in mind. However, The Athletic report that the decision to bring Billy back was actually made prior to Van Dijk’s issue.

The youngster was straight back into action upon returning to Liverpool. Koumetio bagged a brace as the Young Reds beat PSG in the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday night. Welcome back, Billy!

Koumetio back at Liverpool with a bang

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to supporters. It would be strange had a player who failed to impress in Austria then been thrown into the Liverpool first team squad.

For those who have watched Koumetio play over recent months, he still doesn’t look close to being ready for the Reds.

But, keep putting in displays like the one against PSG on Wednesday and maybe that will change.

It isn’t exactly within a centre-back’s usual remit to be a goal scoring threat. But Koumetio was certainly that against the French youngsters.

His second of the night is well worth a watch too. Picking up the ball inside his own half, the French prospect spots the goalkeeper off his line. In a strike that Xabi Alonso would have been proud of, Koumetio pings an inch-perfect left-footed effort into the net from 80 yards or so.

It was an effort that coach Barry Lewtas called ‘unbelievable’ via The Athletic.

Of course, it will be his defensive displays that determine where his future lies beyond the rest of the season. With Liverpool potentially on the lookout for a new centre-back this summer, there is an incentive there.

At this stage though, it’s feels unlikely that Koumetio will be the man to pick up that baton. You never know though, he’s made a great start back on Merseyside.
