Liverpool defender Billy Koumetio has scored twice on his return to the club. Paris Saint-Germain couldn’t handle him.
Billy Koumetio has announced himself back at Liverpool in style. The centre-back spent the first half of the season with Austria Vienna but fell out of favour. That opened the door for a return to the Reds.
Koumetio made that return tonight as Liverpool Under 21s faced Paris Saint-Germain in Kirkby. And the 20-year-old didn’t waste any time.
He opened the scoring for Liverpool and did so in style as he scored from inside his own half. While footage of the strike is hard to come by, watching Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst claims it will ‘surely be the club’s goal of the season’.
Not only that but Koumetio found a second goal before halftime. This time he settled for a close-range header. That made it 3-0 before the break, with a Luke Chambers penalty sandwiched between the 20-year-old’s strikes.
Billy Koumetio on Liverpool return
We can’t imagine what that all means for Koumetio. He endured a really tough time in Austria, falling out of the XI early and failing to get any regular game time.
That’s despite some kind words from the club as his departure looked imminent.
“We are in close contact and I have a phone call with Liverpool later because they would like to bring Koumetio back,” said Austria Vienna sporting director Manuel Ortlechner via Sky Sports Austria.
“We still think he’s an incredibly exciting player. He can have a really exciting career. Liverpool want to bring him back now, they have the right.”
But this is a player who has been labelled ‘outstanding’ in the youth teams. Liverpool have always known he’s a talent – Koumetio simply needs the right environment around him.
The defender couldn’t have offered a better reminder of that on his return.
