Liverpool transfers: ‘Mad scramble’ for Moises Caicedo set to begin next week

Liverpool could be involved as a ‘mad scramble’ commences to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.

That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs. Speaking to The Football Terrace podcast, Jacobs said that Caicedo’s change of agency is set to be completed on January 18th. As a result, it’s claimed that he could still move clubs during the current window.

“Moises Caicedo is on Chelsea’s radar. Liverpool like the player too,” he began. “A deal has been messy in the past due to multiple agent representation, hidden costs and side fees. Therefore, we now need to wait a week, because the new agent of Moises Caicedo doesn’t formally represent him until January 18th. Then there’s going to be a mad scramble to see whether anything is possible in January, otherwise clubs will look to the summer.”

Unfortunately for Liverpool though, Jacobs claims that Chelsea are the most likely club to push forward.

“I think that Chelsea are more likely than Liverpool to try something in January. But the fee will be in excess of £70m all-in in all likelihood,” said the journalist.

“Brighton are not under any pressure to sell. When I spoke to their CEO Paul Barber he made it clear that they’re not planning for anything in January, incoming or outgoing.”

Caicedo gearing up for Brighton exit

Given Caciedo’s recent social media activity, it does look as though the player is gearing up for a change of clubs.

Fabrizio Romano reported as much last week. Romano claimed that the 21-year-old swapping his agents was as a direct result of him looking for a transfer.

That may very well be the case. But as Jacobs points out, the fee for Caicedo is going to prohibitive. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that there isn’t any wiggle room.

“If Chelsea come calling, it will be the same kind of high price as when the Marc Cucurella deal got done,” he told The Football Terrace today.

“With Caicedo, the valuation on him last summer was more around £45m or £50m, which means clubs will feel that maybe we can get Brighton down to £65m.”

Liverpool are still wily operators in the market. They’ll will definitely be looking for a knockdown price. That will be more difficult if Chelsea seriously pursue the player this month. If there is indeed a scramble for his services next week, Liverpool need to be a part of that.
