Liverpool transfer news: ‘Obsession’ stopped Reds bidding for Enzo Fernández

Liverpool didn’t bid for Enzo Fernández because of an ‘obsession’, says Fabrizio Romano. The Reds have other ideas.

Fabrizio Romano believes Liverpool opted against chasing Enzo Fernández for one simple reason. The journalist explained it in an interview with CBS Sports, believing an ‘obsession’ influences things at Anfield.

“Jurgen Klopp, for Liverpool, he really wants Jude Bellingham,” said Romano. “He’s the top priority for the summer.

“This is why Liverpool didn’t move for Enzo Fernández in the January transfer window – because they’re obsessive with Jude Bellingham.

“In the summer, priority for Liverpool is Jude Bellingham.”

Liverpool pass on Enzo Fernández

It’s an interesting one that makes complete sense. Liverpool want Bellingham above all and paying £100m for Enzo would hurt that.

The only way they end up with the Argentine, it seems, is if Bellingham rejects a move to Anfield. That could pave the way for Liverpool to switch targets.

But just having Enzo available is a good thing and he appears to be. A move to Chelsea has collapsed, as Benfica boss Roger Schmidt confirmed this week.

Liverpool’s negotiation position is stronger with Enzo available, after all. He’s a fantastic alternative and someone we’d be thrilled to have in Reds. Bellingham should be the priority, though – he’s an ‘outstanding’ player – and we completely back the thinking here.

It will be a nervous summer, however. Liverpool desperately need to improve their midfield and they must clinch an elite signing. Bellingham and Enzo represent the two best candidates – finishing the summer without either would feel like a disaster.

As for this month, it doesn’t feel as though Liverpool will sign anyone. Enzo would have been a world-class addition but with that off the table, there isn’t an outstanding candidate.

The Reds are putting all of their eggs in the Bellingham basket, then. We’ll find out later this year if that was sensible.
