There is no guarantee that Liverpool will sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes in the summer, according to journalist James Pearce.

Speaking on The Athletic’s ‘Walk On’ podcast, the reporter suggested that although the Reds have been monitoring the 24-year-old closely, his arrival isn’t guaranteed at the end of the season.

However, analysing the Portuguese’s performance against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the FA Cup on Saturday, Pearce hailed the player’s praises.

“I thought it was a lively cameo,” he said.

“He looked like a player who probably felt like he had a bit of a point to prove against the team that he knows that have been monitoring his progress closely.

“Liverpool do have an interest there; I don’t think there’s anything guaranteed regarding the summer window.

“But I think you wouldn’t judge someone just based on one appearance off the bench, but certainly he improved Wolves when he came on, didn’t he.

“For all the hype that surrounded his arrival from Sporting, he had a really slow start to the season. [He] hasn’t been able to really make a big impression at Molineux.

“But you know I think in the last few weeks, there’s been more positive signs from him, and you could see that.”

Nunes not guaranteed for the summer

Although Liverpool will need to bring in multiple midfield additions in the summer, it is more imperative that the club focus on imminent signings.

This is particularly the case with Nunes, as he wouldn’t be able to play for the Reds until next season anyway, having already featured for two teams this season.

Thiago Alcantara has been the only player worth mentioning in the middle of the park for Liverpool this term. Everyone else has been extremely poor.

The likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have shown no reason as to why they should be in the starting XI week-in, week-in. Furthermore, youngsters like Harvey Elliott have demonstrated that they are not ready to play every single minute of Premier League football.

Therefore, although the Reds appear keen on a deal for Nunes in the summer, which will reportedly set them back £50m, the club need additions now.

Saying this, it even appears the Wolves player isn’t a guaranteed signing for Klopp this year.
