New Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo has now delivered his verdict on the Anfield crowd after playing there for the first time.
Speaking to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf after the Reds’ 2-2 FA Cup draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, the 23-year-old raved about the Merseyside support and the way they sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before the match.
“That felt so good,” said Gakpo.
“The atmosphere at Anfield has often been discussed, but when you are there as a player yourself, you notice how fantastic it is to play football in this stadium.”
The Netherlands international also claimed that he has felt really welcome since arriving at Liverpool.
“The training sessions went well in the days before the match and that made me feel good for my debut,” he added.
“The way in which the team and actually the entire club took care of me played a role in that. I also count the supporters. Everyone was great to me.”
Gakpo raves about the Anfield crowd
One thing that will always go in Liverpool’s favour when it comes to transfers is the renowned atmosphere at Anfield.
When players from across the world join the club, they always mention how they were drawn in by the fans and the atmosphere the Reds are famous for.
This was no different for Gakpo, who joined from PSV Eindhoven – a club where the support is extremely present.
Jurgen Klopp needs multiple signings if his side are going to qualify for the Champions League this season, especially in midfield.
If they don’t reach the top-four, those famous European nights at Anfield will be less special – with disappointment expected if they play in the Europa League or Europa Conference League.
Therefore, the club should do all they can to exploit the prestige of Liverpool to lure new players to Kirkby this month.
Otherwise, signings like Gakpo will have been made pointlessly if Klopp doesn’t sort out the mess he has in the middle of the park.
