There is truth in the rumours suggesting Liverpool could sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes in the summer, according to journalist James Pearce.
Taking to The Athletic’s Walk On podcast, the Reds reporter shared his thoughts on the validity of various rumours circulating about Jurgen Klopp’s side in the transfer market.
“The only one of those names you mentioned [Enzo Fernandez and Matheus Nunes] that I attach some validity to would be Matheus Nunes at Wolves,” said Pearce.
“Because we know that Liverpool have got a long-standing interest in him. They were linked with him last summer when he got a move quite late in the window, didn’t he, I think he moved from Sporting to Wolves.
“He’s certainly still a player that Liverpool are interested in.

“There was some suggestion this week that there is a commitment on Liverpool’s part to bid for him in the summer. I can’t say that’s my information at the moment; I don’t know that to be true and I’m not quite sure how it would work in terms of committing to bid for someone.
“But yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he was another name that they decided to pursue.
“He’s a Mendes client and we know that Liverpool have got close links there.
“So, that’s one to keep an eye on, but not those other names you mentioned [Enzo Fernandez].”
Pearce says Nunes rumours are valid
As The Athletic journalist says, the Portugal international came close to making the switch to Anfield over the summer, but ultimately a deal failed to come to fruition.
However, having made the £38m move to the Old Gold, the midfielder has not hit the heights he would have hoped for. Currently, the side sit 19th in the Premier League table, and the former Sporting Lisbon man has made just one assist in 15 of their league matches.
Despite this, it would be unfair to judge him on his stats alone, as Nunes has played a pivotal part in the side’s midfield.
Just last, the 24-year-old put in a strong performance in the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, for which the Birmingham Mail‘s Alex Dicken rated him an 8.5 out of 10.

“Aside from the last 15 minutes, when Wolves lost their rhythm, Matheus was the best player on the pitch,” he said.
“He controlled the tempo of the match and showed why he is one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe.”
According to Sky Sports, it will take £50m for Liverpool to sign the Portuguese star. With Pep Lijnders keen to bring the player to Anfield, this is certainly a transfer rumour worth keeping an eye on.
