Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders is the driving force behind the Reds’ push to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes, according to The Telegraph.

Recent reports have indicated the Merseyside outfit are looking to reignite their interest in the 24-year-old, who came close to making the move to Anfield last summer.

Although Liverpool really need midfield reinforcements now, the Portugal international would be an option for the summer, as he has already played for two clubs this season.

With much debate surrounding the Dutchman’s influence at Kirkby, The Telegraph now claim Nunes is another recommendation made by Lijnders.

This follows the arrival of Cody Gakpo at Anfield, after the Reds assistant boss described the attacker as ‘the missing link’.

Lijnders wants Nunes at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp certainly needs an overhaul of his options in the midfield. Therefore, while Nunes remains a strong candidate for the summer, it is more imperative that the club bring in additions now.

Having only bought one midfielder – that being Thiago Alcantara – in four-and-a-half-years, Liverpool are desperate for fresh legs in the middle of the park.

If the Wolves star was available to make the move this month, the reception towards his arrival would be significantly more positive amongst fans.

However, with this dire need very evident right now, supporters have become disillusioned with Fenway Sports Group and their transfer policy.

Regardless, as Nunes’ former teammate, Goncalo Santos, says, the Portuguese ace is an ‘unbelievable’ player.

Therefore, if Liverpool do end up signing him in the summer, fans should welcome him to Merseyside with open arms.
