‘I am told’: Liverpool planning to make double signing this year, sign of intent already made – journalist

Liverpool plan a double transfer in 2023, according to one journalist. The Reds want to address their midfield.

This comes from Dean Jones. He told the Ranks FC podcast that Liverpool have some big transfer plans for 2023 when it comes to their midfield.

“They are going to address the midfield issue in this transfer window I am told,” said Jones. “They are on the lookout for something that can work, and we’re expecting two midfielders to be signed in 2023.

“We’ll see what level of player they end up signing, but [Cody] Gakpo is the sign of the intent.”

It remains to be seen what ‘addressing’ means this month. Maybe Liverpool make another signing, maybe they merely commit to a summer signing early.

It’s worth pointing out that the Telegraph understands Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal for Matheus Nunes from Wolves. He’d cost around £44m but couldn’t join the Reds until the season is done.

If that is the case, we wouldn’t expect anyone to arrive this month. That’s because Jude Bellingham is undoubtedly the no.1 target in midfield and he certainly isn’t moving anywhere mid-season.

Nunes and Bellingham could be the pairing, then. For what it’s worth, we think it would be a very good one as Bellingham’s quality is undoubted and Nunes looks almost perfect for Liverpool.

But that wouldn’t eliminate disappointment this month. The Reds look incredibly weak in midfield right now, with injuries and energy levels proving problematic. A burst of fresh ideas in there would be welcomed by all.

We’re not sure it’s going to happen, though. If Jones is right – and what he says makes sense – then Liverpool may be waiting until the summer for those new ideas to arrive.

We’ll see if Liverpool can survive until then.
