Report: Liverpool not put off by £50m player’s poor form, they still want to sign him

Liverpool still want to sign Wolves midfielder Mathues Nunes, despite his relatively poor form this season.

The 24-year-old has struggled a little since his big Premier League move last summer. With Wolves sitting in the relegation places, Nunes hasn’t had the desired impact.

But according to The Daily Mail, Liverpool are not put off. They still believe the player can be a ‘long-term solution’ at Anfield.

As a result, they are reportedly considering a move for Nunes, who was heavily linked with the Reds last year.

It’s claimed that the Portugal international could be an alternative to top target Jude Bellingham. With plenty of interested clubs circling Bellingham, Liverpool are said to be exploring other, cheaper options.

This has reportedly led them to Nunes, who is claimed to have ‘caught Klopp’s attention.’ If they are to pursue their interest, Sky Sports report that Wolves will be looking for a £50m fee to sell him.

What’s going on, Liverpool?

This is an utterly bizarre transfer saga. Nunes appeared to be the perfect signing for Liverpool just last summer. Badly in need of a midfielder, the then Sporting Lisbon player looked to tick every box – including price.

In the end, Liverpool didn’t end up moving for him. Instead, Nunes joined Wolves for around £38m and Klopp was left to settle for a panic-induced loan signing of Arthur Melo.

There were reports thereafter that Liverpool would return for Nunes at some time in the future. But it really does beg the question, why?

Talent isn’t the issue here. Although he has struggled a little at Wolves, their whole team has been poor this season. He was still deemed good enough for Portugal’s World Cup squad in November and has a lot of potential.

Rather, the timing of it all just doesn’t make sense. Something smells a little off. Whether it’s agent’s playing games or something else entirely, Nunes is caught up in the middle of a weird merry-go-round.

Hopefully that can end with a move to Liverpool. We’ve long been fans of Matheus, he looks like everything Klopp currently needs in a midfielder. Fingers crossed this can have the ending it always seemed destined to have. But, as he’s played for two teams already this season, a move isn’t possible this month.
