Liverpool reportedly have a chance to repeat a trick and sign Matheus Nunes. The Reds set a precedent last January.

It seems Liverpool won’t sign a midfielder this month, despite wild speculation that they might. The Athletic report that neither Jurgen Klopp nor Julian Ward see the value in a signing right now. Both need to change their mind in order to make something happen.

But the thing is, Liverpool do need to sign a midfielder. The only real question is whether they do it this month and they appear to believe they don’t.

James Milner is ageing, though, and out of contract next summer. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deals expire then, too, and both Jordan Henderson and Thiago are the wrong side of 30. Outside of them, you’re left with Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho – all of which are inexperienced.

It’s easy to understand why Klopp may want to stick with that group, though. The age of players may not show itself this season. The young trio could all improve rapidly at any moment, providing incredible quality just like that. The quality is there for a great campaign if everything goes well.

But it might not. This plan could blow up in Liverpool’s face and jeopardise the season, especially over the second half of the campaign post-World Cup.

And that’s why we think they could repeat a trick that proved very successful last season. The chance will reportedly be there.

Liverpool still have the chance to sign Matheus Nunes

Liverpool have consistently been linked with Matheus Nunes. In fact, Correio da Manha said it just this week – though, it doesn’t look like it’s happening this month.

And part of that may be that Sporting don’t need to sell. Yet. Correio da Manha, once again, claimed recently that Sporting’s £3.4m sale of Bruno Tabata to Palmeiras leaves their books solid until at least January. They no longer need to sell anyone to keep things ticking over positively.

But again, January. Sporting will face the questions about selling Nunes come the winter transfer window and Liverpool could fancy tempting a transfer. After all, it’s something they did last time.

Luis Diaz arrived from FC Porto as a revelation, instantly finding a place in the starting XI and improving Liverpool. The Reds challenged on all fronts right to the death with the Colombian playing a big role.

And if Liverpool find they’re wrong about their midfield before January, they’ll have their chance at Nunes. They may even have a better chance of signing him than they do right now.

The success of Diaz last term shows them that they should absolutely prepare to make a move for a player who could be perfect for them.
