Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards is expected to reunite with his successor Julian Ward once the latter has left Anfield.

Ward took on Edwards’ job when he left Liverpool last summer. But six months in, and he too has already handed in his resignation, which will come into effect at the end of the season.

Now, as per The Telegraph, the two ‘transfer gurus’ are claimed to be set to link up at another club. That will also reportedly be alongside head of data Ian Graham, who is another gearing up to leave next summer.

The trio are said to have made ‘concerted efforts’ to encourage ‘Premier League and Champions League clubs’ to headhunt them.

Edwards getting the band back together

At this point, the sooner Liverpool get Julian Ward out of the door, the better. There have been claims since his resignation was announced that his impending departure will not impact January plans. But how can it not?

It doesn’t make sense to anyone to keep him in his current position. With the winter window needing to be a big one for Liverpool, they can’t make any mistakes.

It could be argued that leaving themselves without a sporting director would be a mistake in this sense, yes.

But that would be to ignore the sheer unhappiness it seems as though Ward is working under. Whether he simply misses his buddy Edwards, or there’s something deeper rooted at play, who knows.

Having taken on a job that was too big for him anyway though, it’s time to cut ties.

As for Edwards, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive since he left Liverpool. The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have been reportedly trying to woo him back into the game.

It would be a surprise to see him join either, but he will surely be back at the top-level sooner or later.

When he is, expect to see his pals Ward and Graham alongside him. Whether or not they can continue their success at a club without the genius of Jurgen Klopp behind them, we shall see.
