Michael Edwards rejects Chelsea, according to reports. That’s despite a strong push from the Blues to secure the former Liverpool man.
This comes from the Athletic. They claim that Michael Edwards has rejected Chelsea and won’t join the Blues anytime soon.
Edwards left his position as sporting director at Liverpool this summer and instantly fell into high demand. Chelsea were the ones reportedly pushing hardest to bring him in, however.
But it was always reported that Edwards wanted time off from football. That’s apparently his ultimate reasoning for rejecting Chelsea – they want him to start right away. Whether they’re prepared to wait into 2023 and try again remains unclear.
For now, though, Edwards will remain at home.
Michael Edwards rejects Chelsea
Both The Times and the Daily Mail have reported on Chelsea’s interest over the last month. It seems they really, really wanted to secure Edwards after the fantastic job he did with Liverpool.
That’s certainly a massive compliment to the Reds, of course. Rival clubs see how far they came over 10 years with Edwards – essentially, Liverpool leapfrogged the likes of Chelsea in nearly every area.

And so there was mild concern that they might actually land Edwards and do a decent job of replicating things. But it was always only mild – a lot more has gone into the rise of Liverpool than simply the work of their sporting director.
Jurgen Klopp is another massive factor on his own – the biggest, in fact – while the overall team behind the scenes is fantastic. That’s why we were never too concerned with Edwards leaving. The team he left behind to oversee Liverpool’s work remained strong and we’ve already seen that in 2022.
Still, it’s unquestionably positive for Liverpool that Edwards rejected Chelsea. The Reds can hold onto their secrets for at least a little longer, while the Blues continue to work form square one.
